BLACK RASPBERRY & CASSIS PRESERVES, ENVELOPING SPICE, SUMPTUOUS TOAST France’s Midi, its south, is a massive if imprecise viticultural paradise nurturing some of the nation’s most expansive and generous reds. This offering from Saint-Chinian’s Jean-François Izarn is an aptly named ambassador of the Mediterranean plain, bringing together broad shouldered Syrah & Mourvedre (grown in stony, hillside plots) and Carignan (grown in white shale and slate). Powerfully ripe and wrapped in toasty nuances of French oak, it’s simultaneously suave and uncompromisingly intense with concentrated black fruit, Christmas cake, and Provençal spices. Serving Suggestion: Lamb tagine braised w/coriander, cumin, cinnamon, & paprika. Roasted Brussels sprouts w/ rosemary balsamic glaze.
