Coteaux du Layon, a northern enclave of Anjou which takes its name from the Loire tributary, Layon, has gained fame for intensely sweet, botrysized dessert wines nicknamed “Sauternes-Killers”. This still, sweet, yet impeccably balanced offering has what it takes in the realms of both powerful flavor and intense taste sensations to be counted as a true powerhouse. While it can be (and should be, on occasion) paired with desserts, its richness, complexity and elegance makes it a treat in its own right or prior to a meal with some strong cheese or foie. Serving Suggestion: Pungent cheeses – creamy goat’s milk or otherwise. Tangy, fruit-based deserts w/ citrus, pear, or apple.
