Casa Los Frailes, Monastrell Viñas Viejas “Caliza”, Valencia, Spain 2020 {biodynamic} 100% Monastrell
BLUEBERRY, BLACKBERRY, GARRIGUE, MINERAL. PRETTY & RICH Caliza, the Spanish word for limestone, describes where the old vines for this very special wine are planted. A single vineyard parcel called “La Parada de Tordos” (Thrush Stop) at the Los Frailes estate and its limestone soils contribute subtlety, elegance, and age-ability to this big, complex, terroir-driven red. In the tradition of the monastery that originally planted this vineyard, it’s finished using their 13th century fermentation amphorae. Serving Suggestions: Grilled steak sprinkled w/ fleur de sel & w/ extra virgin olive oil. Black lentils simmered w/ garlic, rosemary, thyme, & sage, topped w/ parmesan & cracked black pepper.
