Thurnhof, St. Magdalener, Suditrol, Italy, 2021 {biodynamic} Vernatsch (Schiava), Lagrein
WILD CHERRY & RED MULLBERRY, WALNUT & HERBS While Schiava aka Vernatsch aka Trollinger may be in the running for grape variety with the most names (the above are just the commonly-encountered ones!), it’s mostly content to hang out around its South Tyrolean homeland (albeit with an impressive presence in Germany’s Baden), yielding bright, zesty, mountain reds. This one is blended with fellow Alpine native, Lagrein, which imbues darker, earthier tones, and it’s especially lovely with an assertive chill. Serving Suggestions: Smoked sausage & potato salad w/ vinegar & mustard. Vegetarian avocado Reuben on pumpernickle w/ horseradish.
